Seamless Lives of Faith | Psalm 121:1-4

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”
As Fellows, we are learning how to live a seamless life of faith, in that we seek to do everything with excellence for the glory of God and for the service of others. But we often find ourselves holding more than we can carry.
In the midst of trying to manage our personal lives, work, seminars, roundtables, conferences, bible study, Seminary, Youth Ministry, host families, and time with the Lord, we also are physically and mentally drained, exhausted, and even sick. It is in these moments that we are quickly reminded of our human nature and physical limitations.
I started my week very sick. And how frustrated I was! I couldn’t concentrate well, I wasn’t productive, and I had no strength to fulfill my weekly obligations. However, God used this situation to remind me of who he is and to show me exactly how dependent on Him I am.
As the week went on, I found myself reflecting on the omnipotence of God and what it means to belong to an all-powerful God. After giving it some thought, I ended the week with a few conclusions:
First, the omnipotence of God taught me that God is great even when I’m not. Belonging to Him means that I can certainly find peace and comfort in Him. For I know that it is by His immense power that He controls all things, and that nothing escapes from His hands.
Second, knowing that God is not just “powerful” but ALL POWERFUL challenges me to live a life of faith. I am called to live with the knowledge that He is able to do anything according to His good will.
Lastly, the omnipotence of God also reminds me that it is only by His power that I am who I am and I do what I do. It is not by my own strength that I wake up in the morning, serve at the church, go to the gym, lead small groups, or prepare a devotional for Bible study, but merely by the power of the Lord working in me and through me. And so, I do not boast in myself, but I depend on Christ and His power to sustain me in every situation. From restoring my health to serving Him with all my strength and abilities, Christ sustains me. As Paul teaches us in the book of Romans everything comes from the Lord and it is for Him. To him be the glory forever!
Reflecting back on the Psalm, at the end of the week as I got better from my sickness I was also confident of how good it is to belong to a sovereign and powerful God like our God! Who comes to our help and does not slumber nor sleep, but takes care of us and sustains us with his great power, for His own glory.
